Our Team

Mariana Alvarez

Founder and CEO

Mariana Alvarez was born and raised in a small town of Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a childhood rooted in a sense of community and the constant seek for education and improvement. After obtaining a bachelor’s in business administration and a Master of Science in Accounting in the USA, she endured a challenging divorce but found the strength to protect her children and rebuild her life. Despite setbacks, she persevered to establish Controller Works, a virtual outsourced accounting firm dedicated to supporting small to mid-size family-owned businesses. This venture not only represents a business pursuit but also provides fulfillment as it allows Mariana to assist other small business owners in achieving their goals and creating legacies for their families. Her individual experiences have fueled a determination to heal from past trauma and positively impact the success and growth of other family-owned businesses. Through Controller Works she seeks to build a dedicated team to offer virtual accounting support to small business owners, empowering them to progress, realize their aspirations, and establish enduring legacies for their families. Mariana enjoys technology and works diligently on staying up to date on the newest tools that allows her to increase efficiency and automate processes. During her free time, Mariana enjoys spending time with her daughter working on puzzles, reading, and exploring the world through traveling.

Ali Schiewe

Senior Accountant

Ali has been providing bookkeeping and business services since 2002. She is also a former business owner who understands the complexities of running a business and balancing the many demands that owners and managers face. As a QuickBooks ProAdvisor with an education degree (Bachelor’s in Community Health Education/University of Florida), Ali thrives on helping clients manage these challenges through excellent bookkeeping and business practices. Over the past fifteen years, Ali has worked in a wide range of industries and settings and looks forward to assisting each new client reach their goals.

In her free time, Ali enjoys being on the water with the Asheville rowing club, reading, and enjoying the outdoors. She also finds as many opportunities as possible to spend time with her family who live in New England and Florida. As a transplant from both of those locales, she has become an enthusiastic fan of all that our beautiful Asheville area offers.

Jada Brennan

Accountant

Jada has over 20 years of bookkeeping experience along with five years preparing income tax returns for individuals. Having owned a handful of companies over the years, she understands the complexity and demands of operating a small business and strives to help others with their bookkeeping needs.

Jada is a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and loves working with small businesses and nonprofits, helping them with their mission as they strive to make a difference in the world.

Originally from the Philadelphia area, she has called Western North Carolina home for the past ten years. Jada enjoys traveling, gardening, hiking, and camping in her spare time. She is passionate about animal welfare, volunteering with local rescue groups, and fostering cats and dogs.

Juliana Alvarez

Bookkeeper

Experienced accountant with over 12 years of experience in the business and accounting field, demonstrating strong expertise in problem solving and team management. Proficient in accounting standards with strong bookkeeping skills, financial reports, and other accounting processes. Skilled at identifying and resolving issues effectively, optimizing processes, and ensuring the company’s operational compliance.Conveys information accurately and concisely to both teammates and clients. Focused on achieving goals and objectives, with a prominent level of commitment to the company’s success.

Married for 20 years and with Brazilian roots, she values free time and dedicates herself to leisure activities with friends and family, seeking a balance between professional and personal life. A dedicated mother who encourages her son to play sports and supports him in his personal projects, transmitting important values for his development.It aims to seek challenging opportunities in companies that value professionalism, experience, and problem-solving skills.”

Karina Escalante

Senior Accountant

Karina Escalante is a Senior Accountant with over 15 years of experience serving the accounting needs of individuals and businesses. Eight of those years she worked at a CPA firm preparing tax returns and providing tax planning. She aims to add value to her client relationships through business consulting and accounting system and process consulting.

Karina discovered her skill and enjoyment of accounting at sixteen during high school as a dual-enrolled student at AB-Tech community college. Soon after she started working as a bookkeeper and continued her pursuit and growth in accounting, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and her Master of Accountancy from Western Carolina University.

Born and raised in Guatemala, Karina moved to the Asheville, NC area with her family in 2005. She now resides in Fayetteville, WV. She is a health and wellness enthusiast, an avid rock climber, and enjoys spending her leisure time reading and playing chess.

Karina aims to live a life that has a positive impact on her community and natural environment.

Natalie Long

Accountant

Natalie Long is an Accountant who has been providing public accounting and tax return services across many industries since 2019. Natalie earned a bachelor’s in accounting and a master’s in accounting taxation from Liberty University and is a QuickBooks Online Advanced ProAdvisor.

In her spare time, Natalie enjoys reading, sewing, crocheting, and cake decorating, which her six children benefit from. Natalie has had the opportunity to travel the world with the military, first as a child then as a military spouse. Natalie and her family have recently moved to Jay, FL where they homeschool their children and have a flock of chickens.

Renan Hortolani

Bookkeeper

Renan began his professional journey at 19 as a shoe salesperson, where he discovered a passion for business and the intricacies of numbers. Graduating as a technical accountant in 2015, he continued his academic pursuits, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2018, and further enhancing his expertise with an MBA in Tax Management, completed in 2023, coinciding with his achievement as a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. He resides in a small town in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil. Renan is happily married to an early childhood educator, with whom he shares a young son. He finds joy in sports, cars, and travel, and eagerly approaches challenges, welcoming opportunities to solve problems and devise innovative solutions, no matter how simple or complex they may be.

Serena Stuart

Senior Accountant

Serena Stuart is a Senior Accountant with over 10 years of experience in public and private accounting. Serena earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Auburn University. While in public accounting, Serena performed audits and prepared tax returns for a wide variety of clients. When Serena made the move to private accounting, she worked primarily in the healthcare industry as an Accounting Manager.

As a former middle school math teacher, Serena also brings over 10 years of education experience to our firm. She looks forward to using her experience in both accounting and education to assist our clients with their accounting needs.

Serena recently moved from Alabama and is excited to call Laurel Park home. Serena enjoys hiking, reading, and exploring Western North Carolina with family and friends. She has three grown daughters who live in Ohio, Charlotte, NC, and Auburn, AL.
